Dr. Shannon Millikin

Biography

Shannon Millikin is a Professor of Instruction in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Northwestern University. She received her M.A. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research interests include language acquisition, task-based language teaching, and phonetics and phonology of Spanish. Shannon currently teaches Intermediate Spanish and Spanish Phonetics and Phonology. Her pedagogical approaches emphasize the importance of engaging, diverse, and comprehensible input, with a focus on interpersonal communication and the completion of real-world tasks to enhance intercultural competence. Throughout her career, Shannon has successfully secured multiple grants for pedagogical projects, including several Weinberg and Hewlett Grants. She is committed to fostering a sense of community and belonging in education, dedicating time to listening and learning in order to make informed, positive changes to the curriculum and workplace. Shannon has served in various roles within her department, including Spanish Placement Coordinator and Assistant Director of the Spanish Language Program, and she is actively involved in regional and national conferences. Furthermore, she is a member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, where she has received the AATSP Distinguished Teaching Certificate and is a committee member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
