Sharon Murphy began her teaching career in Newfoundland and Labrador, where she taught special education for several years. She completed her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Alberta and took up a position at the Newfoundland Department of Education's Learning Centre. Her responsibilities required extensive travel throughout the province, where she undertook educational assessments at the request of school districts, parents, and other stakeholders. She pursued her doctoral studies at the University of Arizona, focusing on Educational Psychology with a major in Child Development and a minor in Literacy Education. Subsequently, Sharon returned to the Department of Education in Newfoundland and was the principal author of a provincial guide for children with reading and writing difficulties. In 1988, she accepted an appointment at York University's Faculty of Education, where she has served in various roles including Director of the Graduate Program in Education, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Undergraduate Program Director, and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Education. She has co-edited the journal Language Arts for the National Council of Teachers of English and was awarded a University Professorship by the Senate of York University in 2022. Her current scholarly interests include assessment, literacy education, and early childhood education.
