Dr. Shawn Xiong

Biography

Shawn Xiong is a member of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Dalhousie University, where he has been actively involved since 2021. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and a BSc from the University of Manitoba. His academic interests focus on undergraduate biochemistry and molecular biology education, specifically in Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE) and STEM education. Xiong has shown a commitment to enhancing student learning through innovative teaching methods, including theme-based pedagogy and active learning strategies. He has contributed to the development and transformation of undergraduate lab experiences, aiming to integrate research-learning with traditional coursework. He is particularly interested in the implementation of Learning Assistant (LA) programs to foster collaborative learning environments and support students in achieving significant learning outcomes. His research also includes antibiotic discovery and the structural characterization of proteins involved in tumorigenesis. Xiong has published multiple articles in respected journals, highlighting his contributions to both educational and research advancements in his field.
