Biography

Shernaz B Garcia is an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin. Her academic focus has been on educational reforms related to language minority students and the preparation of special education personnel. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses that address the educational needs of students with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Her research interests include intercultural communication skills for educators, instructional planning for language minority students with disabilities, and addressing the disproportionately large representation of language minority students in special education. Garcia has also served as the past president of the Council for Exceptional Children's Division of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Learners and has contributed as an associate editor for the division's annual publication, "Multiple Voices." She holds a Ph.D. in bilingual special education and has worked extensively on multicultural issues within the domain.
