Biography

Sophia Lycouris is a Reader in Interdisciplinary Choreography at the Edinburgh College of Art. With over twenty years of experience as an artist, she focuses on the intersection of movement, dance, choreography, improvisation, and performance, while also incorporating new technologies into her work. She holds a Master's degree in Dance Studies and a practice-based PhD in Improvisational Performance Dance from the University of Surrey, UK. Sophia served as Director of Graduate Research at the Edinburgh College of Art from 2007 to 2011, where she developed innovative doctoral programs and fostered the integration of creative practice with academic scholarship. She has supervised numerous doctoral students in the fields of Creative and Performing Arts and has led courses and lectures at various universities, including Nottingham Trent University. Her current research interests include body and site movement, performative practices, improvisation, and participatory art as a means of political transformation. Sophia is also the programme director for MSc Interdisciplinary Creative Practices and teaches courses in Fine Art and Photography at the undergraduate level.
