Dr. Stanley Johnson

Biography

Stanley L. Johnson Jr. is a Senior Project Scientist at the UCLA Center for Transformation Schools, guiding projects focused on California Educator Diversity and Computational Thinking Equity. With a robust background in K-12 leadership, teacher education, and learning sciences, his expertise emphasizes language and literacy development. Johnson also holds significant positions as a researcher with the UCLA Black Male Institute and as a board member for the Los Angeles County Board of Education, where he served as president for the 2024–25 school year. His academic work critically explores how effective secondary English teachers implement culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogical practices to bridge literacy gaps and address the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of students. He is particularly interested in the role of Advanced Placement English teachers in promoting high engagement among high-achieving boys of color, with a special focus on African American males, ensuring they have access to vital language literacies. Johnson earned his Ph.D. in Education from the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, as well as a Master's in Secondary Education from Loyola Marymount University and a Bachelor's in American Literature and Culture from UCLA.
