Biography

Steve Strand is a Professor of Education at the University of Oxford, affiliated with St Cross College since January 2013. He previously held a position as Professor of Education at the University of Warwick from 2005 to 2012. He has extensive experience in educational research and policy, having worked as the Head of Research Data Analysis at GL Assessment, and in various roles within Local Education Authorities, primarily focusing on pioneering work related to 'value added' analyses of school effectiveness. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (1982) and a PhD in Psychology (1989). His research interests include ethnic, social class, and gender gaps in educational outcomes, with a significant focus on equity and school effectiveness. Strand has methodological expertise in quantitative analysis of large-scale longitudinal datasets and has led several research initiatives at the University of Oxford, including the Quantitative Methods (QM) Hub. His advisory roles include serving on various Department for Education groups and as a joint editor of the Oxford Review of Education. He has contributed to educational policy discussions with government bodies and has received an OBE for his services to equality and human rights.
