Dr. Sue Chapman Kelly

Biography

Sue Chapman-Kelly is a dedicated educator and Programme Director for PGDE Primary Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport. With a robust background in teaching that began in 2001, she has held various pastoral and academic leadership roles across primary and secondary schools in the UK. Since joining the University of Edinburgh in 2016, Sue has taught and supervised a range of initial teacher education programmes. Her research centers on the lived experiences of teachers, particularly issues of retention, mentoring, and the professional learning of teachers within the context of bridging the gap between university training and practical school environments. Sue's PhD thesis contributed significantly to the discourse on self-cultivation in education, exploring how personal development relates to professional ethics in teaching. Her qualitative research highlights the importance of coaching, mentoring, and creating inclusive learning environments that enable teachers to thrive in their roles. This focus on social justice in education drives her work as she seeks to enhance the training and retention of educators in both schools and universities.
