Dr. Susan Mcgregor

Biography

Susan McGregor is a Research Scholar at Columbia University's Data Science Institute and co-chairs the Center for Data, Media & Society. She has co-authored a wide range of academic papers and book chapters, including notable solo author works such as "Information Security Essentials: Guide for Reporters, Editors, and Newsroom Leaders" (Columbia University Press, 2021) and "Practical Python: Data Wrangling and Data Quality" (O’Reilly, 2021). Committed to expanding the reach of data science education, she ensures that essential literacies related to data-driven systems are accessible to learners from diverse backgrounds. McGregor has taught college-level introductory courses for high school students at Bard High School Early College and is currently pursuing additional graduate coursework and certification in Science Education at Teacher’s College, with a focus on computing education. Prior to her role at Columbia, she worked as a Senior Programmer on the News Graphics team at The Wall Street Journal and as a front-end programmer for MediaVast, a photo wire service. Her reporting career includes work with the New York Amsterdam News. McGregor has received several accolades, including the Gerald Loeb Award in 2010 for her work on WSJ’s “What You Need to Know” series, and she was a finalist for the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards in Web Reporting in 2007. Her work has also been nominated for Webby Awards between 2011 and 2015. In addition to her technical and academic pursuits, McGregor enjoys employing artistic methods to devise new approaches to technological challenges, creating small prototypes and installations in her process.
