Biography

Suzanne Hilgendorf completed her Ph.D. under the direction of Braj B. Kachru and Larry E. Smith in the field of German Linguistics, focusing on Language Acquisition and Teacher Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research primarily explores the international spread of English and its historical impact in non-native contexts, particularly in Germany and Europe. Her publications examine the theoretical aspects of World Englishes in various domains such as education, business, and transnational media. Currently serving as Associate Editor for the Journal of World Languages, she has also held the position of President for the International Association of World Englishes from 2013 to 2014 and Review Editor for World Englishes from 2009 to 2015. Before her tenure at Simon Fraser University (SFU), she was an Assistant Professor of German at Wayne State University in Detroit, USA from 2000 to 2007, where she coordinated the Basic German Language Program and was a faculty member of the interdepartmental Master of Arts in Language Learning. She has received distinguished awards for her teaching, including the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Award from Wayne State University and the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
