Biography

Tanya Evans is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Auckland. Her research bridges mathematics education with cognitive science and educational psychology, focusing on the foundations of mathematical cognition and the interplay of psychosocial factors. She is particularly engaged in designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative pedagogical assessment practices. Tanya has received the Faculty of Science Dean's Teaching Excellence Award for Leadership in Teaching in 2024 and the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2015, as a part of the Mathematics Teaching Collaborative. Her academic journey includes a degree in Mathematics Education, a graduate fellowship at Rice University, and a PhD in Pure Mathematics specializing in Low-Dimensional Topology. She also undertook MBA coursework in financial mathematics. Furthermore, Tanya is a founding member of the Quantitative Studies in Education Special Interest Group within the New Zealand Association for Research in Education and has served on the executive committee of the New Zealand Mathematical Society Education Group.
