Biography

Thomas Cowhitt is a Lecturer in Educational Change and Collaborative Improvement at the School of Education, University of Glasgow. His research focuses on practitioner-led school improvement, particularly the formation of close partnerships among classroom teachers and school administrators to develop their own improvements in teaching and learning. He is primarily interested in exploring how practitioners engage with regional and national educational systems and the methods for scaling their own school improvement initiatives within their schools. He is a member of the Education Leadership Policy Research Teaching Group at the University of Glasgow, which includes a diverse group of researchers working in areas such as comparative international education, educational improvement, system change, governance, public policy, educational leadership, childhood practice, and the socio-economic impacts of education. Presently, he is working on the Leverhulme Trust funded project, titled 'Equity and Quality in Local Learning Systems (EQuaLLS)', which examines the impact of large-scale academisation and fragmentation of local learning landscapes in England, along with continuing professional development learning opportunities for teachers. Before joining the School of Education, Cowhitt was a secondary school teacher in the Midwest region of the United States and has a profound interest in improving educational opportunities for young people.
