Biography

Victoria P. Smith is a Senior Lecturer Emerita in Hispanic Studies at Brown University, where she served as the Language Program Director from 1984 to 2005. Her work focuses on designing, teaching, and supervising language courses, as well as training instructors. Over the years, she has taught a graduate seminar on the Theory and Methods of Foreign Language Teaching. Smith has received numerous grants, including from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Brown curricular development funds, enabling her to develop courses and train teaching assistants. Her interest in the use of performance arts in the classroom led her to participate in the 2012 HABLA summer Arts Literacy Institute. Additionally, she has explored contemplative pedagogy in foreign language education, culminating in the publication of her article on the topic in 2008. Smith published a book titled "Yoga College: Balance Transformation" in 2013, focusing on integrating mindfulness in education. She is keenly interested in the implications of disability on teaching and student life, as well as literary translation, particularly of Argentinian writer Alejandra Laurencich's works. Her present focus includes translating Laurencich's recent novel, "Waves of the World."
