Biography

Dr. Vivian L. Gadsden began her career teaching developmental English and reading as well as educational psychology at Wayne State University in Michigan. She has worked as a research analyst in educational policy and has served in significant roles, including six years as the Associate Director of the National Center for Adult Literacy. In 1994, she became the Director of the National Center for Fathers and Families, which focuses on child and family well-being. At the University of Pennsylvania, she has served in leadership positions, including as Chair of the Education Graduate Group and Chair of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Gadsden's research interests include literacy, parental engagement, and intergenerational learning, specifically in historically marginalized communities. She has a strong focus on the interconnectedness of families’ political, cultural, and social histories and their impact on educational access and persistence. Dr. Gadsden has co-edited journals and publications and served on various boards and committees in the field of education.
