Dr. Yan Liu

Biography

Yan Liu is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Director of the Chinese Language Program at Duke University. She earned her Ph.D. in Language Acquisition from Carnegie Mellon University in 2013 and has been part of Duke University since then. Her research interests primarily focus on heritage language education and the challenges faced by heritage language learners in American higher education. Liu is actively involved in professional organizations, having served as a board member for the Chinese Language Teachers Association and currently holding the position of Vice Chair for the Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum Consortium. Over the years, she has contributed to various publications, with a particular emphasis on the development of new teaching materials for Chinese as a heritage language and integrating visual arts in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Liu's commitment to sustainable development education has also been recognized, and she continues to innovate in pedagogical approaches within her field.
