Biography

Yoon Jeon (YJ) Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Prior to joining UW-Madison, he was the founding director of the MIT Playful Journey Lab, where he led an interdisciplinary team of game designers, developers, and researchers to create playful assessment tools. His work focuses on innovative assessment, applying playful activity design to the challenge of measuring learning. YJ's research in playful assessment encompasses computer games that utilize evidence-centered design and analytics techniques, as well as paper-based embedded assessment tools. A core aspect of his work involves close collaboration with practitioners to empower teachers to innovate classroom assessments through the use of playful and authentic assessment tools, thereby impacting student learning.
