Biography

Alejandra Salinas is a Clinical Associate Professor at Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. She teaches mathematics content methods courses and serves as the acting field experience coordinator for the program. Dr. Salinas has dedicated her scholarship to training highly qualified math teachers to work in high-need schools, with a focus on culturally responsive mathematics teaching and anti-racist practices. As a Mexican immigrant with an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering, she has personally experienced the implicit biases that can affect opportunities for success in STEM fields. This background drives her commitment to supporting math teachers in developing their students' mathematical identities and empowering them to advocate for community mathematics. Dr. Salinas has co-written research-driven curricula, including projects for PBS Kids and NSF-funded initiatives aimed at prospective elementary math teachers. She is a principal investigator and co-principal investigator on grants designed to mentor early career teachers in high-need school districts. Currently, she co-leads the Justice & Joy Mathematics Teaching and Learning Project, an NSF-funded Noyce grant that provides full funding for MAT students who commit to teaching in high-need school districts for several years while researching methods to recruit and retain Black and Brown students in the education field.
