Amir Michalovich joined the Faculty of Education as an Assistant Professor in January 2024. He is a scholar in literacies education with expertise in digital multimodal literacies. Obtaining his PhD from the University of British Columbia, he explored the possibilities of language and literacy learning through digital multimodal composing, specifically focusing on video production for newcomer youth from socio-economically marginalized backgrounds in secondary schools in Metro Vancouver. Building on his doctoral and postdoctoral research, he is currently examining teachers' perceptions, practices, and challenges using digital multimodal composing in the context of newcomer students' learning in Manitoba. With a background as a filmmaker, Amir has experience in video and sound editing, producing, screenwriting, directing, and mentoring community-based filmmaking groups in Tel Aviv and Greater Vancouver. He has also managed a nationwide education research project to introduce new multilingual education policy in Israel. His research interests include critical media literacy, computer-assisted multimodal qualitative data analysis, arts-based research, and classroom interaction. In addition to his teaching, he engages in research that encompasses multiple aspects of education, assessment, and professional development associated with multiliteracies, newcomer education, and digital multimodal literacies.
