Before taking up the post of Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Glasgow, Angela Gayton worked at the University of Cambridge as a postdoctoral research associate on an Arts Humanities Research Council (AHRC) project called 'Multilingualism: Empowering Individuals, Transforming Societies' (MEITS). With seven years of postgraduate and postdoctoral classroom-based research experience, her work, associated with the Education Strand of MEITS, explores the relationship between multilingual identities and attainment. Her research involved data collection in secondary schools in South East England, focusing on various themes. Additionally, she was heavily involved in MEITS' public engagement and outreach activities. She also supervised PhD projects on language learning motivation and foreign language anxiety.
