Dr. Anne Burke

Biography

Anne Burke is a Professor in Literacy Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her scholarship emphasizes sociocultural perspectives and focuses on teacher education pedagogical practices that embrace social justice issues. She researches the intersection of children’s rights, voice and agency, play-based learning, and digital literacies, particularly in their engagement with ecological knowledge and climate change. Burke has a strong research portfolio with recognitions and funding totaling $1 million, and she has published and co-edited 10 books and authored 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. She has presented at 70 conferences and given 20 invited talks. Her current research project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, focuses on inspiring Canadian teachers to develop arts-based teaching methods that advocate social justice and promote inclusionary practices. Burke has worked extensively as a classroom teacher and has been involved in various projects that consider sociocultural perspectives on children's learning in cultural contexts. With a passion for social justice advocacy, she uses digital literacies and technologies in education and has designed numerous projects that integrate cutting-edge tools like augmented reality into teaching.
