Dr. Bjorn De Koning

Biography

Bjorn de Koning is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He leads the 'Educational Sciences' team and serves as the academic lead for Community Practice Personalized Online Learning within the Community Learning Innovation initiative. His expertise focuses primarily on technology-enhanced learning, emphasizing instructional design and the support of learning processes to improve educational outcomes. His research concentrates on the effective use of digital technologies, particularly AI and multimedia, to enhance learning experiences, as well as the optimization of educational materials for various learning environments. He investigates self-regulated learning behaviors and strategies for fostering cognitive skills that support higher-order thinking. De Koning’s multidisciplinary research merges insights from cognitive science, educational psychology, neuroscience, and gesture perception, contributing to both fundamental studies in controlled settings and practical interventions in real-world educational contexts. He has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work, including receiving the Erik de Corte Award in 2015 from the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction. He also serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Computers in Human Behavior.
