Biography

Darrin Thornton believes music plays a universal role in humanity, engaging everyone through the ability to pursue music throughout life. His professional career is centered on teaching aimed at fostering lifelong musical engagement in public schools. He holds the position of Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and is a Teaching Professor of Music Education. His teaching areas cover music education foundations and secondary instrumental methods at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He previously served as the Assistant Director of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and has been named interim head of the Department of Graphic Design for the spring 2024 semester. Thornton's research focuses on teacher preparation, ongoing professional development, educational access, outreach, and learning in ensemble settings. Additionally, he contributes to the field of music education as a performing percussionist, conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. He was appointed the Musical Director and Conductor of the State College Area Municipal Band in 2018. Prior to his role in the School of Music, he taught band and instrumental music at elementary, middle, and high school levels in New York and served on the conducting faculties of the University of Missouri and SUNY-Fredonia. He has also held various administrative positions at the University of Missouri, SUNY-Fredonia, and Penn State.
