Biography

Eric Hanushek is a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars in economics and education. His influential research has significantly shaped education policy globally, with widely cited studies focusing on teacher effectiveness, school accountability, the impact of class size, and the economic returns of educational quality. In 2021, he received the prestigious Yidan Prize for Education Research, an international award that recognizes impactful education initiatives, which he used to found the Africa Fellows Education Program aimed at enhancing education policy in Sub-Saharan Africa. Hanushek has authored or edited 26 books and over 300 articles and serves as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research as well as the area coordinator for Economics of Education at the CESifo Research Network. He is a fellow of the Society of Labor Economists and the American Educational Research Association. His past academic roles include positions at the University of Rochester and Yale University and he has served in public roles, including as a commissioner for the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission and chair of the National Board of Education Sciences from 2008 to 2010. Hanushek holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy as a Distinguished Graduate.
