Dr. Evan Fraser

Biography

Evan Fraser is a full professor in Geography at the University of Guelph and the director of the Arrell Food Institute. He has an extensive academic background, beginning with his degrees in forestry, anthropology, and agriculture from the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto. He started his academic career in the UK in 2003, working on farming and climate change at the University of Leeds. His research focuses on global food security and the interactions between environment and agriculture, with over 100 academic papers and numerous books to his name, including 'Empires of Food: Feast, Famine, and the Rise and Fall of Civilizations.' He has been involved in significant funding initiatives, raising $100 million for research and mentoring nearly 50 graduate students. His work has garnered attention in major media outlets, addressing pressing issues in food systems and sustainability. He co-chaired a working group that contributed to the creation of Canada's National Food Policy Advisory Council. Fraser's commitment to public engagement is evident through his writing, documentaries, and educational projects, including lesson plans for high school classrooms globally. He leads the Food from Thought initiative, a major research program focused on reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture through big data.
