Biography

Hyoun-A Joo is an Assistant Professor in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech. She received her Ph.D. in German Applied Linguistics and Language Science from Pennsylvania State University in 2018. Since joining the faculty at Georgia Tech in 2020, she has focused on research areas including bilingualism and language contact, particularly how these intersect with society and identity. Her work investigates structural properties of second language (L2) acquisition and the pragmatic patterns of speech acts among adult immigrants. She has had projects examining Korean immigrants in Germany since the 1970s and their language acquisition experiences. Joo is also engaged in exploring how German immigrants in the U.S. negotiate requests and refusals, thereby investigating the pragmatic competence and speech styles indicative of bilingual and intercultural identity. Additionally, she is interested in developing intercultural communicative competence through interactive teaching methods and case study simulations.
