Dr. Ingrid Piller

Biography

Ingrid Piller is a Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics at Macquarie University, Sydney. She has previously served as the Executive Director of the Adult Migrant English Program Research Centre (AMEP RC). Throughout her international career, Dr. Piller has held academic appointments in various countries, including Germany, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the USA. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities and was awarded the Anneliese Maier Research Award in 2018. Her research expertise lies in sociolinguistics, particularly in the areas of intercultural communication, language learning, multilingualism, and bilingual education. She has published extensively and consulted widely in these fields, with notable works including 'Linguistic Diversity and Social Justice' (Oxford University Press, 2016), which received the 2017 Prose Award in the Language and Linguistics category and the 2017 BAAL Book Prize. Piller is also the author of the bestselling 'Intercultural Communication' (Edinburgh University Press, 2nd ed., 2017) and has over 400 publications to her name. In addition to her academic roles, she is a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts and serves as the editor-in-chief of the international sociolinguistics journal 'Multilingua'. She also edits the sociolinguistics portal 'Language on the Move' and is active on social media, where she tweets about linguistic diversity.
