Biography

Jan-Louis Kruger began his research career in English literature, with a particular interest in how modernist poets and novelists manipulate language and construct narrative points of view. He started exploring the creation of narrative in film and audiovisual translation, focusing on how subtitling and audio description can facilitate audience immersion in the fictional reality of film. Over the past decade, his attention has shifted towards multimodal integration of language, video, and auditory visual sources of information, supplementing and competing with text processing in subtitles. His research employs eye-tracking experiments combined with psychometric instruments and performance measures to investigate cognitive processing of language in multimodal contexts. Current work examines the impact of redundant and competing information sources on reading subtitles in relation to presentation rates and the presence of multiple languages.
