Biography

Janine Remillard is an expert in mathematics education and classroom practices. Her research focuses on how teachers learn to change their teaching and use curriculum materials and instructional tools effectively. She pursues questions that arise in both local and cross-cultural contexts, having co-founded the Community Based Mathematics Project (CBMP), which develops and shares locally relevant mathematics lessons for teachers to adapt to fit their classrooms. Remillard has played a key role in developing and redesigning teacher education programs at Penn GSE, employing engaged research to inform program structures and practices. After teaching at an independent school in St. Louis, she earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy with a focus on mathematics teaching and learning from Michigan State University in 1996. Upon joining the Penn GSE faculty in 1997, she began focusing her research on mathematics teaching and curriculum both in the U.S. and internationally, exploring innovative tools and methods to support instructional improvement, particularly formative assessments and video feedback. Remillard has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Swedish Research Council, and the Spencer Foundation for her research. Her commitment extends to training novice teachers in effective teaching practices that are responsive to students' needs, and she has held several leadership roles within Penn GSE and national mathematics education initiatives.
