Biography

Jill Cheeseman is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education at Monash University. She has extensive professional experience as a primary school teacher and worked as a teacher-educator in various settings both in Australia and overseas. Jill's research interests focus on how children learn mathematics and how teachers can challenge children's mathematical thinking. Her PhD thesis, titled "Challenging Children to Think: An Investigation of Behaviors of Highly Effective Teachers to Stimulate Children's Mathematical Understandings," was completed in 2010. This work built on research from the Early Numeracy Research Project, which identified features of highly effective mathematics teachers for young children. Jill explores the dynamics of one-to-one teacher-child interactions during mathematics lessons and their role in deepening students' thinking. Currently, she participates as the Chief Investigator in an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery grant that investigates the relationship between teacher expectations and student persistence in learning mathematics, along with collaborating professors from various universities. Her commitment to teaching at Monash covers multiple courses. Jill's recent projects include investigating early concepts of mass and the development of strategies for encouraging students to face challenges in their studies. She is also recognized for her contributions to mathematics education research, having received the MERGA Research Award in 2011.
