Dr. Joan Hughes

Biography

Joan Hughes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin. With over 24 years of teaching and research experience in K-12 educational technology, her work focuses on teacher learning and technology integration in preservice teacher settings, specifically within PK-12 schools. Hughes studies how K-12 teachers and students utilize technology for classroom learning and how school leaders can support tech integration. Her research also explores the preparation of new teachers through university certification programs, evaluating their readiness for future technology-driven teaching roles. Hughes has a Ph.D. in Education Psychology from Michigan State University and a B.A. in English from Pomona College. Her interests include digital equity and the experiences that support teacher knowledge within K-12 school contexts. Her extensive publication record includes over 3,400 citations, showcasing her influence in the educational technology field, beginning as a computer teacher in Silicon Valley during the early 1990s.
