Biography

Johanna van Schaik is an Assistant Professor at the Behavioural Science Institute at Radboud University. She specializes in translating findings from (neuro)psychology into understanding and informing science and technology education, particularly in primary school settings. Her research primarily focuses on physics concepts, computer programming, and computational thinking with the aim of improving young learners' motivation and attitudes towards science. Jo co-supervises PhD students on projects investigating individual differences in science education and the implementation of educational robotics in primary school classrooms. Employing a range of behavioral research methods including laboratory experiments, classroom studies, questionnaires, and electroencephalography, she has contributed to significant research in educational sciences. Jo completed her master's degree in cognitive neuroscience at Radboud University and later received a grant for PhD research at the Baby and Child Research Center at the Donders Institute. Following her PhD completion in 2017, she worked as a postdoc under a personal grant in educational sciences at Leiden University and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, focusing on inquiry learning and hands-on science learning design implementation. Currently, she teaches several courses related to learning and motivation, learning and instruction, and educational research.
