Dr. Karla Culligan

Biography

Karla Culligan is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of New Brunswick, where she specializes in French immersion education, bilingualism and multilingualism education, and mathematics education. She received her PhD in Education from the University of New Brunswick in 2018, following a Master of Education in 2008 and a Bachelor of Education in 2002, all from the same institution. Her research interests include codeswitching, translanguaging practices, and teacher education, employing qualitative research methodologies. Dr. Culligan is actively involved in the Language Research Institute of Canada (L2RIC), where she serves as a Co-Investigator on SSHRC-funded projects focused on strength-based pedagogies in Indigenous contexts and addressing gaps in French language teacher education. She participates in numerous committees and organizations related to education and language teaching, including the Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics and the Canadian Association of Language Teachers, where she has contributed to various professional practices and organizational committees. Additionally, she has served as Managing and Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics from 2012 to 2019.
