Professor Dr. Katie Brubacher

Biography

Katie Brubacher is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta, specializing in Elementary Education. She holds advanced degrees in education from the University of Toronto and an undergraduate degree in English literature from the University of Waterloo. Prior to joining the university faculty in 2022, she worked predominantly with multilingual children in Ontario's elementary schools and has over 20 years of experience as a K-12 teacher, including several years as a secondary teacher in England. Brubacher is a research specialist in language and literacy education, with a focus on the experiences of multilingual newcomers in elementary schools, particularly those entering Grades 4 to 6. Her research adopts a humanizing perspective, which emphasizes the inclusion of children's multilingualism as a way to support their sense of belonging and well-being in schools. Her teaching credentials include English Language Specialist and Guidance certifications from the Ontario College of Teachers, and she has extensive experience in grant writing and program development in literacy education.
