Dr. Kwesi Yaro

Biography

Kwesi Yaro is an Associate Professor in the Department of Secondary Education at the University of Alberta. Dr. Yaro specializes in Mathematics Education and has a PhD in Curriculum Studies from the University of British Columbia, where he focused on methods of teaching and learning mathematics. He also holds a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education and a Bachelor of Education with a mathematics focus from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. Prior to his position at the University of Alberta, Dr. Yaro taught elementary and secondary mathematics methodology courses as part of UBC's Teacher Education Program. His extensive background includes experience as a mathematics teacher in the Ghanaian public education system, engaging in community outreach activities related to mathematics and science in schools. Dr. Yaro is a certified professional teacher in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. His research interests center around cultural sustainability, social justice, and inclusion in mathematics education, informed by an Afrocentric paradigm and guided by Ubuntu philosophy. He aims to explore the role of diasporic African parents in children's mathematics learning and contribute insights for developing culturally responsive mathematics curricula. One of his notable publications is titled 'Situated Perspectives: Creating Mathematics Tasks for Peace and Sustainability' in the Canadian Journal of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education.
