Biography

Melvin Peralta is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Education Department of Teaching and Learning at NYU Steinhardt. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Teacher Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Science in Statistics, a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education from City College of New York, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Georgetown University. His research investigates the sociomaterial, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of mathematics, statistics, and data science education, centering on the constructions of competence within mathematics and statistics classrooms, particularly through the lenses of race, gender, class, ability, and social identity markers. Peralta's pedagogical approach draws inspiration from music, arts, and science fiction, aiming to explore alternative possibilities in STEM education. He emphasizes themes of relationality, participation, and creativity in his teaching and research. Before joining NYU, Melvin was a graduate student and University Distinguished Fellow at Michigan State University and a Math America Fellow teaching mathematics in New York City middle and high schools. He advocates for producing outstanding math teachers through comprehensive education programs for practicing educators and doctoral researchers in mathematics education.
