Dr. Nell Duke

Biography

Nell Duke's work focuses on early literacy development, particularly for children living in poverty. Her specific areas of expertise include the development of informational reading and writing in young children, comprehension development, and instruction in early schooling. She addresses issues of equity in literacy education and has served as a Co-Principal Investigator on projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the Spencer Foundation, among others. Duke has been recognized as one of the influential education scholars in the U.S. by EdWeek. In 2014, she was awarded the P. David Pearson Scholarly Influence Award from the Literacy Research Association. She has received several awards from organizations such as the American Educational Research Association, the International Reading Association, and the National Council of Teachers of English. Duke is a consultant for numerous education policy organizations and speaks widely on literacy education. She has authored or co-authored several journal articles and book chapters, with recent works focusing on the development of readers and writers through informational text and project-based instruction.
