Biography

Nidia Bañuelos is an Assistant Professor in the area of Adult, Continuing, and Higher Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on the design and implementation of postsecondary programs for working adults, particularly addressing the needs of low-income students who have caregiving responsibilities. She has a special interest in the history of 'non-traditional' learners and the institutions that serve them. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for the Networks and Cultural Assets Project (NCA), which involves administering surveys and interview instruments to measure college students' community cultural wealth (CCW) as outlined by Yosso in 2005. Additionally, she is collaborating with the University of Texas System on a National Science Foundation project to investigate the cultural assets and social support utilized by Latine STEM students in pursuing their academic and career objectives. This ongoing study employs a longitudinal mixed methods design, focusing on ego network analysis to examine how network structures influence the nurturing of students' CCW and STEM identities. Overall, her work aims to inform local educators and assist in the development of asset-based programming to support STEM students of color.
