Biography

Niral Shah is an associate professor in the Learning Sciences and Human Development at the University of Washington College of Education. His research explores the social, political, and emotional dimensions of human learning. He is particularly interested in how people learn and practice anti-racism in their work and personal lives, as well as the ways in which forces like artificial intelligence shape education and societal inequity. Shah's prior work has focused on race and racism in STEM education, specifically on how racial narratives around STEM ability affect students' identities and participation in classrooms. He is also the co-developer of the EQUIP classroom observation tool, which supports teachers and educational leaders in identifying and mitigating implicit bias in classrooms. His work has been funded by prestigious organizations including the Institute of Education Sciences, Spencer Foundation, and National Science Foundation, and has been published in top academic journals such as Harvard Educational Review and Teachers College Record. Shah is a National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellow and has received several awards for his contributions to research and education.
