Dr. Patricio Herbst

Biography

Patricio G. Herbst is a professor at the University of Michigan's Marsal Family School of Education and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, focusing on mathematics education. His research centers around understanding the professional work of mathematics teachers and university instructors, with particular attention to teacher knowledge, thinking, decision-making, and the design of online learning environments for mathematics teachers. Herbst's work emphasizes teaching and learning geometry in secondary schools and college classes, and specifically addresses the teaching and learning of mathematical proof. He actively engages in the development of technologies for learning, such as Anotemos for video learning and LessonDepict for storyboarding. Herbst leads the GRIP (Grasping Rationality Instructional Practice) research group, established in 2001, dedicated to the study of geometry, reasoning, and instructional practices, serving as a training ground for doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. His ongoing projects include professional development initiatives for high school teachers and enhancing online professional learning communities in mathematics education.
