Dr. Paul Evans

Biography

Paul Evans is an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, specializing in areas such as expertise, motivation, instruction, teaching strategies, and learning in educational contexts. He has contributed significantly to research in schools, universities, and music programs, publishing in leading national and international academic journals and books. He supervises research students and chairs the Cognitive Load Motivation Lab at UNSW. His teaching encompasses educational psychology across undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degree programs. Paul is an active member of the Educational Psychology Research Group and conducts research into high-quality motivation and the behaviors and cognitions required for effective learning. His work is underpinned by frameworks including self-determination theory and cognitive load theory. He employs quantitative, survey-based research methods along with multilevel modeling to analyze complex datasets. He has collaborated with over 20 academic researchers and served on editorial boards for journals in music education and educational psychology.
