Biography

Pierre Dillenbourg is a full professor in educational technologies at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He holds a Master's degree in Educational Sciences from the University of Mons, Belgium, and was one of the first worldwide to apply machine learning methods to education, leading to a self-improving teaching system. Dillenbourg pursued a PhD in computer science at Lancaster University, UK, focusing on the educational applications of artificial intelligence. Since joining EPFL in 2012, he has directed the Center for Research on Learning, Training, and Technology (CRAFT) and the Center for Education in the Digital Age (CEDE), implementing EPFL's MOOC strategy. He is also the director of DUAL-T, a leading house dedicated to technologies for dual vocational training systems. Dillenbourg founded several education-related startups and has been instrumental in creating the Swiss EdTech Collider, an incubator for 80 educational technology startups. He is noted for his contributions to learning sciences as an inaugural fellow and has served as Associate Vice President for Education and interim Provost at EPFL.
