Biography

Rakesh M. Bhatt received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a Professor of Linguistics and is actively involved in programs related to Second Language Acquisition Teacher Education (SLATE) and South Asian Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Illinois. His specialization lies in sociolinguistics and language contact, addressing issues of migration, multilingualism, code-switching, language ideology, and world Englishes. Bhatt's empirical research primarily focuses on South Asian languages, particularly Kashmiri, Hindi, and Indian English. He has authored significant works, including 'Verb Movement Syntax Kashmiri,' published by Kluwer Academic Press, and co-authored 'World Englishes' with Mesthrie, published by Cambridge University Press. His research also appears in various esteemed journals such as the Journal of Sociolinguistics and the Annual Review of Anthropology. Currently, he is working on a book-length manuscript on the sociolinguistic patterns of the Kashmiri language within the diaspora.
