Biography

Rebecca Tarlau is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, focusing on the intersection of education and social movements. Her ethnographic research encompasses various areas, including state-society relations, popular education, labor education, and critical pedagogy, particularly within the context of Latin American development. Tarlau is the author of the award-winning book 'Occupying Schools, Occupying Land', which examines how grassroots social movements can integrate educational reforms with agrarian issues. This work challenges the perception that social movements are inherently oppositional to state engagement, demonstrating that educational institutions can empower movements by recruiting activists and enhancing political power. Her forthcoming book explores transformative strategies adopted by teachers’ unions across the Americas. Tarlau is currently engaged in a multi-country study on sustainable agriculture education and its socio-ecological impacts in Latin America.
