Sarah Hopkins is an Associate Professor at Monash University in the Faculty of Education, dedicated to research and educational engagement focused on reducing educational inequalities in Australia. She aims to improve the achievement outcomes for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and increase opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With experience as a secondary school mathematics teacher, particularly in low socio-economic areas and juvenile detention centres, Sarah’s research is at the intersection of Mathematical Cognition, cognitive psychology, and mathematics education. She has led several projects investigating children’s development of counting strategies for arithmetic, including a Spencer Foundation-funded initiative. Her innovative work led to the creation of the Keyboard tool, which leverages children's visual-spatial perception to help them enumerate small quantities. Currently, she is leading an ARC Discovery Project aimed at using Keyboard in classrooms to enhance learning in lower primary schools and alter long-term achievement trajectories for disadvantaged children. Sarah has also coordinated the Keep Learning Program, supporting young adults with intellectual disabilities in higher education, and is working with secondary schools to develop suitable numeracy assessments. Her methodological approach incorporates both quantitative and qualitative techniques, including Rasch analysis and microgenetic designs to study learning difficulties.
Requirements are standardized across the Faculty of Information Technology for most Master's programs including Computer Science and Data Science.
