Dr. Sophina Choudry

Biography

Sophina Choudry is an esteemed Presidential Fellow at the University of Manchester, specializing in the educational experiences of marginalized groups. She has a diverse background, having grown up in Bolton and spent time in Germany and Pakistan. Her educational journey began with a BSc in Mathematics from Manchester Metropolitan University, followed by a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics and an MSc in Educational Research at the University of Manchester. Sophina's research focuses on understanding the barriers faced by ethnic minority students in educational settings and the role of critical pedagogy in mediating these experiences. She is particularly interested in the intersections of identity, including ethnicity, gender, and social class, and how they affect access to learning opportunities in mathematics education. As a Programme Director of the BSc Education at the Manchester Institute of Education, she leads a team of over 30 staff members and is committed to improving educational practices through innovative research. Her work includes various leadership roles and collaboration with international scholars, emphasizing a commitment to addressing educational inequalities.
