Biography

Steve Brown joined the University of Glasgow in July 2023 as a Lecturer in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in the School of Education. Previously, he was a lecturer and programme leader for MEd TESOL and Director of Studies at the University of the West of Scotland. Transitioning to higher education in 2018, he has worked for several years in the Scottish further education sector as an ESOL lecturer and curriculum leader, while also being a TESOL educator. During this time, he completed his EdD at the University of Glasgow, focusing his dissertation on the role of college ESOL programmes in facilitating the settlement of migrants in Scotland. His career also includes volunteering as an English teacher in Mongolia and experience in private language teaching across various countries as an English teacher and trainer director of studies. He holds an MSc in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, TQFE from the University of Stirling, and Cambridge DTEFLA. His research interests encompass ESOL and English language policy with a particular focus on the emancipatory potential of ESOL in facilitating social justice, and he is engaged in exploring diverse areas such as translanguaging, multilingualism, curriculum and materials design, native speakerism, teacher education, and the role of capitalism in English language teaching, as well as the processes of decolonisation and internationalisation in higher education.
