Dr. Sylvia Celedón Pattichis

Biography

Sylvia Celedón-Pattichis is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in bilingual/bicultural education. Previously, she served as a senior associate dean of research and community engagement director at the University of New Mexico. Celedón-Pattichis is dedicated to preparing elementary pre-service teachers in a bilingual/ESL cohort and teaches graduate-level courses in bilingual education. Her research interests are centered on the linguistic and cultural influences in teaching and learning mathematics, particularly among bilingual students. She has acted as a co-principal investigator for the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Mathematics Education Latinos/as (CEMELA), focusing on broadening the participation of Latinx students in mathematics and computer programming contexts. Her accomplishments include winning various prestigious awards recognizing her contributions to education, including the Innovation Research Diversity Teacher Education Award. Celedón-Pattichis has co-edited and authored several books and articles dedicated to access and equity in mathematics education for bilingual students. Her notable projects address motivations for Latinx students pursuing STEM careers and the inclusion of authentic computer programming experiences into the curriculum. As a prominent figure in mathematics education research, she continues to shape teaching practices that address equity issues in learning environments for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
