Biography

Andrea R. English has been teaching and researching philosophy education for over twenty years. Before joining the University of Edinburgh as a Chancellor's Fellow in Philosophy Education in 2014, she taught at Mount Saint Vincent University in Canada and Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, focusing on teacher education and graduate education programs. She received her doctorate in philosophy education from Humboldt University Berlin. English currently serves as President of the John Dewey Society and is an Editor for the journal IMPACT, which addresses philosophical perspectives on education policy. She is an Executive Member and Trustee of the Philosophy Education Society in Great Britain, and an Associate Editor for Dewey Studies. English leads an international research network on Listening Education, and is involved in various branches and seminars of the Philosophy Education Society. In her teaching, she emphasizes co-designed undergraduate and postgraduate courses across multiple facets of education. Her recent research centers on dialogic democratic education, focusing on advancing understandings of listening in the teaching process and the role of productive struggle in learning. English has supervised numerous PhD students working on topics related to decolonization, inclusivity, and educational experience.
