Biography

Birgit Pepin taught mathematics in secondary schools in England before pursuing a PhD in mathematics education. With a background from Germany, she has lived in France and England, focusing on the work of mathematics teachers across various countries and examining the pedagogic practices influenced by cultural traditions. After completing her PhD, she worked in several higher education institutions in the UK including the Open University, Oxford Brookes University, and Manchester University. Between 2009 and 2014, she held a full professorship in Norway, and since 2015, she has been a faculty member in the Netherlands. Her teaching and research interests center around mathematics curriculum materials, pedagogical strategies for teachers, and student learning in innovative environments, particularly in the context of upper secondary education in mathematics. She has published extensively on curriculum resources (e.g., digital resources) as well as on teacher and student interactions with these materials in the mathematics teaching and learning process. Furthermore, she has led numerous research development projects funded by agencies like the UK Economic and Social Research Council and the European Union, contributing to five EU projects and various national funding agencies. Birgit also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Research Method in Education and has edited several special issues for international mathematics education journals. Additionally, she is involved with various international boards and scientific professional associations.
