Biography

Eric Rice is an Assistant Professor and Program Director for Teacher Development Programs at Johns Hopkins University School of Education. He teaches courses on urban school reform and educational inequities, leveraging his experiences as an associate director at the Urban Health Institute where he led small grants programs. Currently completing his PhD in anthropology at Johns Hopkins, Eric is engaged in a multi-year ethnographic evaluation study of new teacher mentoring within the Baltimore City Public School System. He previously served as a program evaluator for a U.S. Department of Education partnership grant, improving educational outreach initiatives that provided guidance to over 700 teachers in Baltimore City Schools. His scholarship focuses on imperative research interests such as school funding, teacher leadership, charter schools, and urban school reform. Ongoing projects involve an analysis of discourse surrounding school funding in Baltimore and the development of teacher professional development modules designed to enhance motivation among students. In collaborative efforts, Eric partners with Makerere University School of Public Health in Uganda on a study abroad program aimed at impacting public health education and the lives of Ugandan youth.
